Manchester United will have to sell players in order to fund a transfer for a defensive midfielder before the transfer window closes.

After signing Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would like to sign a unique midfielder who can provide protection for the back four, but that is unlikely to happen, especially if the Red Devils are unable to force a few exits.

Despite having agreed on numerous loan deals for players to leave the club temporarily, Manchester United have yet to sell anyone permanently this summer, but that could change quickly as clubs begin to panic as the transfer deadline day on Tuesday, August 31 approaches.

Let's take a look at some of the possible deals United could complete before the end of the transfer window.

1. Jesse Lingard to West Ham

Lingard's time at Manchester United appeared to be coming to an end before he was loaned out to West Ham in January. But that move proved to be a wise one, as it allowed him to quickly regain his reputation, as he scored nine goals in his first ten games for the Hammers.

Even though the 28-year-outstanding old's form wasn't enough to ensure he was selected for England at the European Championship, it appears to have prompted a change of heart for Solskjaer, who has since indicated Lingard is in his plans for this season.

However, if an offer for the England international arrives, which could provide United with funds to sign a defensive midfielder, the Red Devils will gladly accept. West Ham are still interested in Lingard, so this transfer saga could take another turn before Tuesday, August 31st.

2. Donny Van de Beek could maybe move on loan

Donny van de Beek has been battling for a starting spot at Manchester United.

Last season, the midfielder cost £40 million and scored on his debut.

However, he has never appeared to have satisfied Solskjaer, and the Football Insider has even suggested that the former Ajax midfielder's future with United looks bleak.

With the Red Devils still interested in Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez, van de Beek appears to be falling further down the pecking order and may be able to sell before the transfer deadline.

3. Kieran Trippier

According to reports, Trippier is desperate for a move to the Premier League after spending over two years with Atletico Madrid in Spain.

According to reports, Solskjaer is looking to add some experienced competition for current right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and believes Trippier can be the right support act.

Any move will be contingent on Manchester United's ability to negotiate Trippier's fee with current La Liga champions Atletico Madrid, as the former Tottenham Hotspur right-back enters the final 18 months of his contract with Atletico Madrid.

4. Ruben Neves

Unlike the quickly debunked reports linking Manchester United to Aurelien Tchouameni, there has been no denial of reports linking Manchester United to Ruben Neves.

Neves has Premier League experience, and Wolves are eager to cash in at the right price.

The Portuguese midfielder has the passing and tackling ability to contribute to Manchester United's midfield in both phases of the game.

The Daily Star reported at the end of July that the Red Devils had spoken with representatives of Neves.

5. Saul Niguez

Manchester United have been linked with Saul for some time now but has not made an official bid yet.

They face competition Premier League rivals Chelsea who are reportedly leading the chase for the defensive midfielder.

But it's deadline day, who knows what could happen. Saul Niguez's move to United is a possibility but we have to wait and see if United will make a move for him.
